We met up with David & Mindy Henson (friends from Columbia, MO, on mission in Kiev for 10 years) and they showed us around Kiev a little bit. We went on the Metro – we would NEVER have done that on our own – down to Kreshatyk Street (spelling?). It’s an area where there are lots of little shops and cafes, and on the weekend they close the street to cars, so there are people milling around everywhere. Mindy says Ukrainians are very good at strolling. Which is great, that’s just my speed.
We went to a little outdoor café for lunch, and I tried vareniky, and John had Chicken Barbegue (according to the menu). His was a very tasty skewer of grilled chicken and vegetables and of course he ordered mashed potatoes on the side. They didn’t come with gravy but I think he was so thrilled to see mashed potatoes that he didn’t care. Vareniky are small, half-moon shaped little flat dumplings that come filled with meat, or potatoes and cheese, or sometimes fruit for a dessert item. They were very good, the dough was really light.
The metro was down a huge long escalator, and was quite the experience. I’m glad we got to do it. We did lots of walking around outside, I’d estimate 3-4 miles on the conservative side. This trip may be the world’s most expensive diet and exercise plan. Yikes.
We did a little shopping at a big department store, where David tried to talk John into buying a man-purse. John wasn’t going for that, of course. He did, however, buy a couple of inexpensive hand towels to cut up into wash cloths. Apparently those are rare here.
Tomorrow is our appointment at the adoption office (the SDA). Hopefully there will be a potential good match or two. We’ll try to post tomorrow after we find out more.
